How to get a Blue Button VA Record
If you have a service-connected disability and the FAA has required you to have an aviation psychiatry assessment, I need a complete copy of your VAMC records. If you’ve had any treatment, I’m required to review it. If you’ve never had mental health treatment at a VA, I can prove that, too, to the FAA by reading the file.
The fastest way to produce the record is to download it yourself from My Health-e-Vet at the VA: https://www.myhealth.va.gov/mhv-portal-web/home
Please ensure that you download the entire record. I can’t review excerpts because then I wont’ know what was left out.
Please wait until the week before our appointment before you download the file; this will make sure the record is as up to date as possible.
Compensation and Pension Records
Compensation and pension files, also called the C-file, may require special attention. These records are probably not part of your Blue Button report.
If you are requesting a C-file, please have a conversation with your VA medical records technician. If your compensation and pension assessment was conducted by a third-party agency you may need to file a separate form unique to your clinic.
Here’s the VA’s medical release. Please read it carefully. It’s pre-filled with my information if you are having records sent to me.
